Becoming a Buddhist

Going for refuge to the Three Jewels – Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha – is the foundation for attaining all other spiritual realisations.

Taking the Refuge Vows is the special method by which we enter the gateway to Buddhadharma and become a pure Buddhist. By taking these vows we commit ourselves to finding happiness from within by relying upon Buddha, Dharma and Sangha throughout our life.

This day retreat offers a very precious opportunity to engage in the powerful and immensely meaningful Refuge Vow Ceremony.

In this ceremony, Resident Teacher Kelsang Dana will explain the practice of refuge and grant the Refuge Vows. Through this we enter into Buddhism and become a Buddhist.

By learning to keep the refuge commitments, we will gain protection from fear and harm, and in particular from strong delusions that prevent us from making progress on the path to enlightenment. This is a very special opportunity to take the vows for the first time or to retake your vows.

More information on the twelve commitments of refuge is explained in The New Meditation Handbook.
