Structured study

Foundation Program

Taking the next step

“We need to study and practice Buddha’s teachings:

To develop our wisdom,
To cultivate a good heart, and
To maintain a peaceful state of mind”

Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

What is Foundation Program (FP)?

FP is a structured study program for those wishing to deepen their understanding and practice of Buddha’s teachings. FP classes are taught by Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Lhachog. If you love Buddha’s teachings and want to gain a deeper understanding of them, FP is the perfect way to take the next step in  your spiritual development.

From 31 January 2022, we begin studying a new book – The New Heart of Wisdom. By revealing the profound meaning of the very heart of Buddha’s teachings – The Perfection of Wisdom Sutras – this book shows how we can attain pure, lasting happiness through developing special wisdom and universal compassion. This is a rare and precious opportunity to gain real, practical understanding and personal experience of the ultimate truth of all things as taught by Buddha.

Who can join?

Since Buddha’s teachings are of benefit to all, anyone with a sincere wish to join is welcome.

It’s usually beneficial to have some experience of our other classes before enrolling on FP. We also recommend coming along to a trial class before enrolling.

If you’d like to find out more about what’s involved or arrange to trial a class, please contact epc@meditateincanberra.org

The benefits of joining FP include:

  • The systematic study of a set of texts by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, which reveal the entire path to enlightenment.
  • Studying in the company of like-minded students. FP students are in the fortunate position of being able to make meaningful spiritual friendships and support each other in their study and practice of Buddhism.
  • Making a commitment to study. FP students make a number of commitments, such as attending scheduled classes, reading sections of the text before class and taking part in discussion groups. By committing ourselves in this way, we set up a study regime that enables us to really focus on Buddha’s teachings.
  • Through the program we mix our mind with Buddha’s teachings and practise them in our daily life. Without such a commitment we are easily distracted and our practice can lack the power that allows us to truly transform our lives.

When are classes held?

FP classes are held on scheduled Mondays at 6–9.30pm. There are two sessions, with a refreshment break in between.

Where are classes held?

FP classes are held at our Centre in the Chifley Health & Wellness Hub, 70 Maclaurin Crescent, Chifley.

When can I join?

New students can join at any time during the study of each text.

Course fees

FP course fees of $100 are paid monthly in advance and include admission to other classes and courses run by the Centre at no extra cost.
